WEEE and Canon's Environmental Goals for Resource Conservation

The European Union (EU) has issued a directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) which is meant to mitigate the impact of WEEE on our environment. The WEEE directive has begun its implementation in the EU Member States from August 2005. Most EU countries have transposed the EU directive into national law for local enforcement. The WEEE directive stipulates that the rate of recovery of WEEE shall be increased by an average weight of at least 70% while the component, material and substance reuse and recycling shall be increased to a minimum of 50% by 31 December 2006. Canon, as a producer, must set up recycling systems either on a collective or individual basis to provide for the recovery of WEEE in each EU country.

This symbol indicates that this product is not to be disposed of with your household waste, according to the WEEE Directive (2002/96/EC) and your national law. This product should be handed over to a designated collection point, e.g., on an authorized one-for-one basis when you buy a new similar product or to an authorized collection site for recycling waste electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). Improper handling of this type of waste could have a possible negative impact on the environment and human health due to potentially hazardous substances that are generally associated with EEE. At the same time, your cooperation in the correct disposal of this product will contribute to the effective usage of natural resources. Canon’s Environmental Goals for Resource Conservation

By the end of 2005, Canon targets a reduction of 15% or more in the size and weight of its products compared with 2000. Nearly all of our new products have already met this target.

At the design level, Canon is seeking to achieve an increase in the recycling, the reuse and the recovery of our products to rates which exceed the WEEE directive.
